CVE-2019-7609: Kibana Arbitrary Code Execution

CVE-2019-7609 is rated critical with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 10.0 and affects Elastic Kibana, along with 1 other product in NVD’s configuration data. Per its scoring, it can be exploited over the network, without authentication, without any user interaction. The scored impact on confidentiality, integrity and availability is the highest available. CISA added it to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2022-01-10, which means exploitation in the wild has been observed.

Vulnerability description

Kibana versions before 5.6.15 and 6.6.1 contain an arbitrary code execution flaw in the Timelion visualizer. An attacker with access to the Timelion application could send a request that will attempt to execute javascript code. This could possibly lead to an attacker executing arbitrary commands with permissions of the Kibana process on the host system.

Underlying weakness

CWE-94: Improper Control of Generation of Code

The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment.

Affected products

  • Elastic Kibana: before 5.6.15; from 6.0.0 before 6.6.1
  • Red Hat Openshift Container Platform: 3.11; 4.1
