CVE-2017-17790: Ruby Lang: Command injection
CVE-2017-17790 is rated critical with a CVSS v3.0 base score of 9.8 and affects Ruby Lang. Per its scoring, it can be exploited over the network, without authentication, without any user interaction. The scored impact on confidentiality, integrity and availability is the highest available.
Vulnerability description
The lazy_initialize function in lib/resolv.rb in Ruby through 2.4.3 uses Kernel#open, which might allow Command Injection attacks, as demonstrated by a Resolv::Hosts::new argument beginning with a '|' character, a different vulnerability than CVE-2017-17405. NOTE: situations with untrusted input may be highly unlikely.

Underlying weakness
CWE-74: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements in Output Used by a Downstream Component
The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.
Affected products
- Ruby Lang: from 2.2 up to and including 2.2.8; from 2.3 up to and including 2.3.5; from 2.4 up to and including 2.4.2; 2.5.0 preview1
